What was going to be a “Happy Easter” post has turned in to an update on my BICYCLE ACCIDENT on Saturday, April 7th. While riding my bicycle on a lazy Saturday afternoon with my boyfriend, I was DOORED. For those of you not familiar with the term, getting DORRED is when a motorist opens their door into the path of a moving bicycle. Usually the car is parked and the driver DOES NOT LOOK to be sure the road is clear, fortunately that is what happened in this incident.
My boyfriend and I were obeying all traffic laws and riding safely in the bicycle lane during the time of the accident. My boyfriend was riding in front of me, so he didn’t see exactly what happened, but he sure did hear it. My bicycle and I hit the door of the car, Bike stopped but I kept moving. This could have been so much worse if I hadn’t been wearing gloves and a helmet. Despite the gloves, my right hand was scraped and cut deeply. Despite the helmet my head was throbbing. Fortunately, I was thrown straight forward, rolled and slid, then came to rest within the bicycle lane.
I spent most of the rest of the day (from about 5:30 PM to about 12:30 AM) in the hospital getting checked out. I was in shock and had what must have been a mild concussion, but CAT scans came back negative and no bones appeared broken, but my shoulder and ribs were bruised. I don’t remember at least 45 minutes to an hour following the accident. The biggest miracle of the afternoon, though, was that some of our good friends who were visiting from Anaheim (we didn’t know at the time that they were in town) just happened to be driving by RIGHT AFTER the accident. She recognized us as they drove past, and he just happened to have a car that could get us to the hospital and the bikes to the house safely. They even stayed at the hospital with us until they made sure I was checked in and that the doctors were able to see me. What good friends!
I hope you all have a Happy and SAFE Easter weekend. I certainly don’t want to downplay the seriousness of my accident, but I was lucky that my accident wasn’t more serious (ie: deadly), many people DIE from these kinds of accidents. If you are traveling on any kind of 2-wheeled vehicle, please WEAR A HELMET…And if you’re driving this weekend, please share the road and always be aware of your surroundings
