RIP Starman

“The stars look very different today…”

If you know anything about me (or have ever taken a road trip with me) you’ll know that I LOVE  David Bowie. He has been a favorite of mine ever since I saw the film Labyrinth as a young girl.

I remember one of the first items I ever borrowed from the library by myself was an audio cassette of Let’s Dance. I listened to that tape for hours. I had been raised on a wholesome mix of Motown and The Beatles. This Bowie fellow really rocked my world. The next day,  I rode my bike to the library and checked out all the other Bowie albums they had available. From then on, I’ve been a huge fan.

I was so excited for with the news of Black Star this weekend.

Today, I am heartbroken over the news of David Bowie’s passing. My heart goes out to his family, his friends, and his fans. A small tribute to one of my heroes.

Feliz Dia De Los Muertos

ptp_calavera_card1

In celebration of Dia De Los Muertos, I have added new Calavera greeting cards to my Etsy Shop! They are available in a number of awesome colors and comes with its own envelope. Each card is cut and hand-folded, and is made from my original illustration. They are great for Halloween or Day of the Dead, but could be used any time of year for yourself or to send to your spooky friends!

Feliz Dia De Los Muertos

calavera tote bagHappy “Dia De Los Muertos”, Everyone!

Today we celebrate the “Day of the Dead” with a new tote bag from Pink Toe Press! This bag was designed by Yours Truly and was hand-printed in Burbank, CA. This new bag design is currently available at Rocket Fizz Burbank and in my Etsy shop! This bag is a great tote bag for Day of the Dead, of course, but the design is great for using all year round! Bring a bag to market for your groceries or fill it with books for class. The bag itself measures 13 inches by 13 inches and is made from durable cotton canvas, so you can tote just about anything in this great Calavera Tote Bag!

Sneak Peek of New Tote Bag Design

Boo!

calavera tote bagJust in time for October, this new tote bag is great for the upcoming season!!!

Made from an original illustration, this design is printed on cotton canvas tote bags. Can you guess the design? That’s right! It’s a Calavera from Dia De Los Muertos, or a Mexican Sugar Skull from “Day of the Dead”. I hand-drew the design and processed it in to a silk screen. More photos to come, and perhaps more colors too?

Calavera Makeup

Calavera makeup for Dia de los Muertos

I know that Dia De Los Muertos is a few days away , but I thought I’d share some “Dia De Los Muertos” makeup that I did over the weekend. I volunteered (through/for the shop) at an awesome Halloween/ Autumn Festival at a local elementary school, working an activity booth and passing out candy and treats to kids. The event was put together really well and I had a lot of fun!

Since it was a Halloweeney event, I wanted to wear a costume, but not something that was:

1: Not too scary, as I was at an elementary school and there were lots of young kids.

2: Not too hard to wear, as I was outside and running around after bean bags  for 4 hours.

3: Fun. I didn’t want something boring or goofy. With a latex allergy, a lot of masks and “special effects” makeup are off-limits anyways. Many people really liked the make up too. Although, I think I scared a couple kids who just saw the left side of my face first. :-)

This is what I came up with on the fly, and I think it turned out well and really didn’t take that long to do.  My only complaint is that I rode my scooter to work and a little bit of the makeup on my forehead got smudged from my helmet, but despite having my full-face helmet on, that was the only problem I had (didn’t even notice it with the wig once I put that on). I plan on doing this again if/when we go downtown for Dia de los Muertos this week. I know that they have people there who will do the face painting for you, but I think it’s more fun to do it myself!

Calavera Dog

Calaveras, or Sugar Skulls, are a mainstay of the holiday Dia De Los Muertos. Molded from sugar, traditional Calaveras represent the sweetness of life and the sadness of death. I’ve always loved and been fascinated by this holiday ever since I was young. My Spanish teacher in primary school was raised in Mexico, and she introduced us to the holiday and its traditions.

Living in Southern California, I really enjoy visiting Olvera Street during the Dia De Los Muertos celebration. It’s something I look forward to every year. Death is a sad part of life, but I think that celebrating someone’s life is a good way to start when mourning someone’s death. This Calavera is of a dog’s skull. I was inspired of the memory of our beloved family dog who passed away not too long ago. Drawn using markers and pens, this drawing is nice and colorful. I think this would make a lovely card or tattoo design. Or both! Who knows, maybe I’ll Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos in style by getting this awesome tattoo.
